You bought PBN links. Your rankings went up. You felt great. Then three months later, your money site dropped like a rock. A manual action? No. An algorithmic penalty from the March Spam Update. You did not build the network yourself, but you still got burned.
Most people think PBN penalties only hit the network owners. That is wrong. Google penalizes the money site receiving the links too. I have seen it happen to dozens of clients over the last 10 years. The good news is that you can avoid these penalties. You just need a safety checklist.
This guide covers exactly how to use PBN links without getting your money site penalized. Anchor text ratios, link velocity, spacing between links, and how to protect your site if the network gets caught. Follow this checklist and you will sleep better at night.
Why Your Money Site Gets Penalized for PBN Links
Google does not care who built the network. If your site receives unnatural links from a deindexed PBN, you get the penalty. SpamBrain tracks link patterns. It looks at clusters of sites that all link to the same money pages. When those PBN domains get deindexed, your site gets flagged retroactively.
The March Spam Update made this worse. Google now detects expired domain misuse faster. If you bought links from a network using aged domains that changed niche, those links are toxic. You do not have to build the PBN yourself to suffer the consequences. If you want to avoid these risks entirely, consider premium PBN links that are built with proper domain vetting and footprint-free infrastructure.
So how do you stay safe? You follow strict rules on anchors, velocity, spacing, and money site protection.
Anchor Text Safety Rules
Anchor text is the clickable text of a link. Over optimizing anchors is the fastest way to trigger a penalty.
1. Keep Exact Match Anchors Below 10%
Exact match anchors are links where the anchor text exactly matches a keyword you want to rank for. For example, "best running shoes" linking to a page about best running shoes. Natural backlink profiles have very few exact match anchors.
After 10 years of running PBNs, I keep exact match anchors under 10% of total backlinks. For competitive niches, I go even lower, around 5%. The rest are branded (your site name), generic ("click here", "this site"), URL naked (yourdomain.com), and long tail variations ("find the best running shoes for flat feet").
You can check your anchor distribution in Ahrefs (starts at $129 per month for Lite) or Semrush ($139 per month Pro). Look at the "Anchors" report. If you see a spike of exact match anchors from your PBN links, dilute them with other link types. Use our free anchor text diversifier tool to generate a natural mix before you place any new links.
2. Use Branded Anchors for the Majority
Branded anchors are your money site's name. For example, "BuyPBNLinks" linking to buypbnlinks.com. These are the safest anchors you can use. Google expects brand mentions. Even if the network gets deindexed, branded anchors rarely trigger penalties.
I recommend at least 50% of your PBN links use branded anchors. The rest can be a mix of generic, naked URLs, and a small percentage of long tail or exact match.
3. Rotate Anchors Across Your PBN
Do not use the same three anchors on every link. Vary them. Create a spreadsheet with 20 to 30 different anchor phrases. Include misspellings, different word orders, and natural phrases. For a site about dog training, you might use "click here", "this training guide", "dog training tips", "learn more", "the website", "trainyourdog.com".
Spread these anchors across your PBN links. No single anchor should appear more than 2 or 3 times across your entire network.
4. Avoid Money Keyword Anchors on Tier 1
This is controversial but I have seen it work. Do not use money keyword anchors on your highest quality PBN links. Use branded or generic anchors instead. Save the exact match anchors for tier 2 or tier 3 links.
Why? Because Google pays the most attention to the links closest to your money site. If those are branded, you look natural. Exact match anchors from high authority domains look like paid links.
Link Velocity Safety Rules
Link velocity is the speed at which you acquire new backlinks. Too fast, and Google thinks you are manipulating rankings.
5. Add No More Than 5 to 10 PBN Links Per Week
For a new money site, start slow. Add 2 to 3 PBN links per week. For an established site, 5 to 10 per week is safe. I have seen sites add 50 PBN links in a week and get hit by the next Link Spam Update. Core Updates have caught a lot of fast movers.
Use a spreadsheet to track your weekly link count. Spread your campaigns over 2 to 3 months. Do not blast all your links at once.
6. Mix PBN Links with Other Link Types
PBN links alone can look suspicious. Mix in natural links. Guest posts, niche edits, social media, forum profiles, web 2.0s. Even a few low quality directory links help break the pattern.
Aim for a ratio of 60% natural or white hat links to 40% PBN links. The natural links provide camouflage. If your entire backlink profile is PBNs, you are asking for a penalty.
7. Pause Link Building During Google Updates
When Google rolls out a Core Update or Spam Update, stop all link building for 7 to 14 days. Let the dust settle. The March Spam Update deindexed many networks that were actively adding links during the rollout.
Monitor the SEO news. Search Engine Land and the Google Search Status Dashboard will announce updates. When you see one, pause. Wait for the SEO community to report that the update has finished rolling out.
Spacing and Diversity Rules
PBN links should not all point to the same page using the same anchor on the same day.
8. Distribute Links Across Multiple Money Pages
Do not point every PBN link to your homepage or your most important money page. Spread them out. Link to inner pages, blog posts, category pages. A natural site has links pointing to many different URLs.
Use a tool like Ahrefs to see your link distribution. If 80% of your PBN links go to one page, that is a red flag.
9. Vary the Link Placement
PBN links can be in the body of an article, in a sidebar, in a footer, or in a resource page. Mix them up. Do not put every link in the first paragraph of a blog post. Some links can be in "related posts" sections or author bios.
Natural sites have links in different locations. Google's algorithm looks at patterns. If every link from your PBN is a dofollow body link with the same anchor, that is a footprint.
10. Add Nofollow Links to Your Mix
Real sites have a mix of dofollow and nofollow links. PBN sellers almost always give you dofollow because that is what customers pay for. You need to add nofollow links yourself.
You can get nofollow links from forums, blog comments, social media profiles, and Q&A sites like Quora. These are easy to build. A ratio of 70% dofollow to 30% nofollow looks natural.
11. Space Out Links from the Same Domain
Do not get two links from the same PBN domain on the same day. Space them out by weeks or months. Natural sites earn links over time. A single domain linking to your money site twice in one week is suspicious.
If you buy multiple links from the same network, ask the seller to spread them out. Or schedule them yourself if you control the posting dates.
Money Site Protection Rules
These are the most important rules. They protect your money site if the PBN gets deindexed.
12. Never Link Directly from a Fresh PBN Domain
Fresh domains have no history. They look suspicious to Google. Always use aged domains for PBN links. Aged domains have backlink profiles and history. They look like real sites.
If you are buying PBN links, ask the seller about the domain age. A good seller uses domains that are at least 2 years old, preferably 5 years or more. Avoid sellers offering links on fresh domains.
13. Use a Buffer Site or Tier 2 PBN
This is my favorite protection tactic. Do not link directly from the PBN to your money site. Instead, link from the PBN to a buffer site (a web 2.0, a medium article, a social page), then link from that buffer site to your money site.
If the PBN gets deindexed, the buffer site takes the hit, not your money site. You lose the link equity from that PBN, but your rankings do not crash. The buffer site can be a free WordPress.com, Tumblr, or Blogger page.
This adds an extra step, but it is worth it for competitive niches.
14. Diversify Your PBN Vendors
Do not buy all your PBN links from one seller. Spread your orders across 3 to 5 different providers. If one network gets deindexed, you only lose a portion of your links.
I have seen clients who bought all their links from one cheap source. That source got wiped out in the March Spam Update. Their rankings dropped 30 positions. Clients who diversified barely noticed the update. For a deep dive into footprint-free infrastructure, read our complete PBN hosting guide covering unique IP setups and provider selection.
15. Monitor Your Backlink Profile Weekly
Use Google Search Console for free. Check the "Links" report every week. Look for sudden spikes in new referring domains. Also check for links from low quality sites. If you see a PBN domain that looks spammy, disavow it immediately.
Do not wait. The faster you disavow toxic links, the less damage they cause. Also use Ahrefs' "New & Lost" report to track link velocity.
16. Keep a Record of Your PBN Links
Maintain a spreadsheet with every PBN link you buy. Include the domain, the URL of the post, the anchor text, the date added, and the seller. If a network gets deindexed, you need to know which links to replace or disavow.
Most sellers will not track your links for you. You have to do it yourself. This spreadsheet also helps you avoid overloading any single anchor or page.
17. Test PBN Links Before Buying in Bulk
Buy one link from a new seller. Wait 30 days. Check if the link stays indexed and if your rankings move positively. Then buy a small package. Only scale up after you see consistent results.
I have tested dozens of PBN sellers over the years. Many start strong then get deindexed after 3 months. Testing protects your money site from a single bad batch.
18. Use the "No Overnight" Rule
Do not expect PBN links to work overnight. Google takes time to crawl and evaluate new links. A sudden spike in rankings after adding links is a red flag. It tells Google that you manipulated something.
Spread your link acquisition over weeks and months. Let the rankings rise slowly. That looks natural.
What to Do If Your Money Site Gets Penalized
Even with all these precautions, penalties can happen. Here is your recovery plan.
19. Disavow the Toxic Links Immediately
Download your backlink report from Google Search Console. Identify the PBN domains that look suspicious or have been deindexed. Create a disavow file listing those domains. Upload it to Google Search Console.
Google processes disavow files within a few weeks. Your rankings may drop further before they recover, but you are stopping the bleeding.
20. Build Replacement White Hat Links
After disavowing, you need new links. Focus on guest posts, niche edits, and digital PR. These are slower but safer. Use the money you saved from PBNs to invest in white hat campaigns.
I have seen sites recover from PBN penalties within 2 months by combining disavow with aggressive white hat link building.
21. File a Reconsideration Request Only for Manual Actions
If you received a manual action (you will see it in GSC), fix the issue and file a reconsideration request. Explain what you did wrong and how you fixed it. Be honest. Google's reviewers have seen every excuse.
Do not file a reconsideration request for algorithmic penalties. They do not accept them. You just have to wait for the next algorithm refresh.
Frequently Asked Questions
Not recommended. New sites have no trust. Adding PBN links too early can trigger a sandbox or penalty. Wait at least 6 months. Build some white hat links first.
I keep it under 20% of total backlinks. For a page with 100 total referring domains, no more than 20 should be from PBNs.
Yes. The update retroactively targeted expired domain misuse. Even links built years ago can become toxic if the domain's history changed.
Nofollow links pass less equity but are safer. A mix of dofollow and nofollow from the same PBN looks natural. Some sellers offer nofollow options.
Ask for sample domains. Run them through the footprint checklist in our other guides. Check domain age, backlink profile, and content quality. A good seller will provide this data.
50% branded, 30% generic, 10% naked URL, 5% long tail, 5% exact match. Adjust based on your niche competitiveness.
